Colorado State Adds Aussie Runner Grace Goldsworthy

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – Dipping into the Land Down Under, the Colorado State Track and Field program signed runner Grace Goldsworthy to a national letter of intent, announced Wednesday by head coach Brian Bedard.

Goldsworthy, of Melbourne, Australia, specializes in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races in addition to relays – a realm that has been successful for the Rams in recent history.

"Grace comes from the same club as current Ram Tom Willems," sprint coach J.J. Riese said. "They do a great job down there, so I know we're getting a great person and student-athlete. Given the success we've had in the 200, 400 and 4x400 recently, I am excited for Grace to fit right in and contribute immediately with those women."

She will join the training group of Lauren Gale, Jessica Ozoude, Jasmine Chesson, Yolonda Johnson and Krista Mayer, among others. Gale, a three-time Mountain West Champion, has not met a 400 race that she has not won, while Ozoude is a two-time 200 conference champion. Both own the CSU indoor and outdoor records in their respective events. In relays, the Rams have medaled in the past four 4x400 races at conference – indoor and outdoor – as well as the past two 4x100 outdoor races including the 2019 title. The school records in all three of those relays have also been set in the past three seasons.

For high school, Goldsworthy attended Wesley College, however she competed on the track for Old Xaverians Athletic Club under the tutelage of coach Lloyd Knight. Just last year, the Rams signed Willems to the men's team from the same club, and the freshman proceeded to finish runner-up in the 400 at conference with the third-best time in school history and was a part of the 4x400m squad that set a school record earlier in the season.

To start the calendar year, Goldsworthy competed at the Victorian Championships, winning the bronze in the open 400 with a personal-best time of 54.79 that set a club record. In February, she held her own in a field of Olympic qualifiers at the Melbourne Track Classic for a fifth-place finish. In the same month, she placed second in the 400 U20 and fifth in the 200 U20 at the NSW Junior Olympics.

Last year at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney, she helped her team win the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, while she added a silver-medal finish in the 400 and seventh-place showing in the 200. At the same meet, her now-again teammate, Willems, won the 400 with a club record.

The Aussie's experience dates to the 2016 Australian Junior Olympics and Victorian Junior Olympics. Her other personal bests consist of 25.15 in the 200 and 12.71 in the 100.
