Senior distance runner named CoSIDA Academic First Team
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – To go along with his Colorado State University diploma that will be arriving in the mail, there will also be a certificate from CoSIDA for academic excellence en route for senior distance runner Forrest Barton. Friday he was recognized for his accomplishments as he was selected for the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 team for Men's Track & Field/Cross Country.
Barton, from Castle Rock, Colo., finished with a 3.78 GPA as he completed a degree in Journalism and Media Communications. In his time at CSU, Barton has earned academic All-Mountain West and Mountain West Scholar-Athlete accolades a combined five times. Now that his spikes have been hung up, Barton plans to pursue a career in freelance photography and build a documentary.
If Barton paced himself for a great final season as a Ram, he succeeded. In the fall, he led the Rams to a second-place finish in the Mountain West Cross Country Championships with a runner-up showing of his own in the 8,000-meter race. The performance earned him his first All-Mountain West First Team accolade.
The indoor season provided more individual and team highlights for Barton. He set personal records in both the 3,000 and 5,000, while the latter put him 10th on CSU's all-time list with a time of 14:17.69. At the conference meet, he finished sixth in the 5,000 to contribute three points to the men's score on the way to their second-straight MW Indoor Championship. The canceled outdoor season means he did not have an opportunity to improve on his outdoor records, but he left his mark in the 3,000 steeplechase as he sits 12th all-time.
Student-athletes are selected for their combined achievements scholastically and competitively, voted on by members of CoSIDA. All-District honorees will be placed on the CoSIDA All-America ballot, with Academic All-Americans announced by the organization from June 16-19.
District 7 covers the states of Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas.
