Leonard leads the way on 3-meter springboard
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Led by junior Katie Leonard, Colorado State's women's divers earned four of 16 placements on the first day of the Air Force Diving Invitational.
Â
Leonard scored a 237.65 in the preliminaries, earning her the final spot in Thursday's championship finals on the 3-meter springboard. She came back with a 223.50, sticking in eighth place.
Â
"Katie did an awesome job making it into the finals against some formidable competition," CSU diving coach Chris Bergere said. "Her finals weren't as good as her prelims, but she did make the finals and was very excited, as were we all."
Â
Senior Rachel Holland, sophomore Jessica Albanna and freshman Braeden Shaffer all came back in the consolation finals, placing 12th, 15th and 16th, respectively. For Holland, the second set of six dives showed a 20.35-point improvement from the preliminaries, posting a score of 233.95. The best round for Albanna (213.90) and Shaffer (222.60) both came during the preliminary round.
Â
"Rachel, Braeden and Jessica all making the consolation finals bodes well for our impending competition in a few weeks at the Mountain West Championships," Bergere said. "As a team, we did some fine dives, but overall, a little inconsistent. It was a good experience for us."
Â
Thursday was the first of three days of competition for all five of the Colorado State divers. Friday's session will move to the 1-meter springboard, with the preliminaries starting at 10 a.m., followed immediately by the consolation round, which features placers 9-16 from the prelims. The top eight divers all advance to the championship finals at 6 p.m.
