Freshman Thrower Picks up Mountain West Weekly Honor for Field
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Two personal records with both registering in the top-5 in the conference this season was enough to earn the Mountain West Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors for Gabi McDonald, announced by the conference Tuesday.
Â
The third-year track student-athlete, but freshman in eligibility has thrived in her first year competing with a Colorado State uniform. She now resides on three top-20 lists for Colorado State history.
Â
This past weekend in Lawrence, Kan., McDonald recorded a 53'8.5'' shot put for the best throw in the Mountain West regular season and 35th in the NCAA. She finished fourth in the event at the Rock Chalk Classic behind North Dakota State's Akealy Morton and Shelby Gunnells – both top-10 nationally – and Kansas' Alexandra Emilianov who is No. 21 on the list. Conference-wise, the Rams notched the top-3 shot put marks in the season with Tarynn Sieg (53'0'') and Maria Muzzio (52'8.25'') concluding the 1-2-3. When you look at the all-time CSU list, she slid right into the No. 4 spot, trailing Loree Smith, Aaliyah Pete and record-holder Sieg.
Â
McDonald, of Fort Collins, Colo., tossed her discus PR 171'3'' for sixth place at the meet behind Muzzio who turned out MW's best of the season at 175'2''. McDonald's is fourth on the list behind San Diego State's Jordyn Bryant and Erica Grotegeer. Nationally, McDonald's mark ranks 65th in NCAA and for CSU record book purposes, she moved up two spots to 16th all-time.
Â
Also at the meet, McDonald threw the hammer 157'10'' for just the third time in her career. The weekly award is McDonald's first as a track and field student-athlete. It is the fourth award for a Ram this outdoor season.
Â
Colorado State will travel to Clovis, Calif. next week for the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships, starting May 13th.
