Hamer Named Mountain West Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year

Hamer is the second Ram to earn the honor and first since 2016.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Add another title to the ever-expanding resume of Eric Hamer.
After taking home first place finishes in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races at the 2021 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Eric Hamer has been named the 2021 Mountain West Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year, the Mountain West announced on Wednesday.

It has been an outdoor season littered with achievements and records for Hamer, the most recent coming as the conference also named Air Force's Mahala Norris the female winner of the award.

The Monument, Colo., native recently participated in the U.S. Olympic Track and Field trials to cap an outdoor season in which he earned First and Second Team All-American honors at the 2021 NCAA Championships in the 10,000-meter and 5,000-meter races, respectively. In both races, Hamer reestablished his own school records and was well under the qualifying time of 28 minutes for the Olympic Trials in the 10,000m.

Hamer was also an integral part of the 2021 Mountain West Men's Championship squad as he helped lead the Rams to the top spot on the podium. It marked the 12th consecutive year with a conference championship for Colorado State and a defense of the title for coach Brian Bedard's squad.

Hamer becomes the second Ram to win the award after thrower Mostafa Hassan was recognized in 2016. The award is voted on by the head coaches at each member school.
