All-American runner has children following her footsteps

After winning two All-American awards, the Virginia Frank Award, and Mencimer Award, it would seem like her successful athletic career would be her biggest accomplishment.

But to CSU alum Debbie Maass, throwing in the towel and pursuing a simpler life of being a mother is where her pride lies.

She is grateful for her experiences as an athlete, especially as a Ram. The community she has built around running and the friendships she has created along the way is something Maass will cherish forever. Her experiences have taught her invaluable lessons which she now instills in her own children as they embark on their journey as athletes.

"If I wasn't an athlete, I feel like I would have missed out on some life-long learning experiences," Maass said. "I would have missed the camaraderie, dedication to a team, and learning what matters most is not what you achieve, but what kind of person you become. I feel very fortunate to have been a part of the CSU cross country and track and field programs."

As a Ram, Debbie won back to back All-American awards for the indoor mile in 1993 and 1994. She was also a three-time conference champion in the mile from 1992-1994.

And her success didn't stop there. She was awarded the Virginia Frank Award and the Mencimer Award in consecutive years and is one of the rare CSU athletes to do so. The Frank Award is presented annually to the most outstanding female athlete; the Mencimer Award to the most outstanding female scholar-athlete. With this resume, Maass will be inducted into the 30th CSU Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, September 10th at 4:30pm in Canvas Stadium.

"An experience I have kept with me throughout my life what was when I qualified for the mile at the NCAA meet," Maass said. "It was a dream come true to receive an All-American award in the mile that year, and it was amazing to see all the hard work and dedication come together at just the right time to make that happen. That was something I never thought I would accomplish and I moment I will always cherish while I was at CSU.

After her time at CSU, Maass went on to study physical therapy at Regis University in Denver. She currently holds a doctorate degree in the field.

Her passion for athletics is something she enjoys sharing with her family. Maass runs with her husband, Paden Wolfe, every day and following closely in her footsteps are her three children – Parker, Baylor and Kinley -- leaving her family very busy.

Her oldest son, Parker, is a freshman in college and attending the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill on a running scholarship and her younger two daughters just started high school.

"It was nice being able to incorporate my career and be able to help the team and the community," she said. "I never thought all three of my children would actually run. It's been a wonderful experience."
