Claudia Burgess Receives First MW Weekly Honor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Redshirt junior Claudia Burgess was named Mountain West's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for her performance in the season opener this past Friday, announced Tuesday by the league office.

Burgess, of Boulder, Colo., won the Wyoming Invite with a time of 17:17.4 in the 5,000-meter race. The individual victory helped lead the Rams to the team win over Colorado, Colorado School of Mines, Wyoming, Western Colorado and Northern Colorado. The margin between No. 27-ranked CSU and the eighth-ranked Buffaloes was two points and a mere .4 seconds that Burgess held off CU's top runner.

Three Rams finished in the top-10 with the final two scorers placing 10th and 13th to round out the Colorado State points. For Burgess, it is her first weekly conference honor.

The award marks the second straight season in which a Ram has earned a weekly honor after the season opener. Back in January, Thomas Chaston was dubbed with the accolade after being the first uniformed runner to cross in the Colorado State-Wyoming Dual. This is Burgess' first weekly nod.

Next, the Rams will run in the Roadrunners Open, hosted by Metro State, on Sept. 17th in Denver.
