Rams will compete on all three board over three days
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State's women's divers will go solo to close out the regular season, attending the three-day Air Force Diving Invitational, giving the Rams one more tune up on each board before the Mountain West Championships.
Â
The invitational runs Thursday through Saturday, each day starting at 10 a.m. A live stream and live scoring are available. The women will compete in the 3-meter springboard Thursday, followed by the 1-meter and platform in successive days.
Â
"I love the format of the meet, first of all, because it's set up just like the NCAA meet and the conference championships," CSU head diving coach Chris Bergere said. "I think the thing I'm most looking forward to is the competition, because there is competition at every level. Lindsay Gizzi is obviously our top diver, and she's going to come up against some really good divers from Texas A&M, BYU has a diver who is top eight at the NCAA's and Wyoming's Melissa Mirafuentes is going to be there. The competition is really going to be good, so when we get there, we'll see how they perform. Our women are really looking strong."
Â
The last time the divers were at the AFA Natatorium, Gizzi, a freshman, set the school record on the 1-meter with a score of 335.05, earning Mountain West Diver of the Week honors for the fourth time this season. Bergere said it's not just her who performs well at Air Force, but the entire roster of CSU divers has found a comfort level at the facility, calling it a home away from home.
Â
It's a short drive for the team to put the final touches on their dive sets, as well as get some work on the platform. The Rams – actually only Josie Meitz and Braeden Shaffer – have competed on the tower once this season, doing so at the Phill Hansel Invite in Houston before the Thanksgiving break.
Â
Those dives will not be the focus for Bergere's group, but he does expect some strong performances on the springboard events.
Â
"We just want them feeling comfortable with their dives, because if they're comfortable, they'll do the dive well," he said. "It's all about doing the dives well, not necessarily the hard ones, though they do do some difficult dives. It's all about feeling comfortable doing the dive you're doing. I'm looking forward to that situation, and it's just good indicator of where we are and what we have to do."
