Weekend Competition in California Canceled

Undefeated Rams on hold until late January

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Having already established the school record for dual wins in a season, Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team was ready to resume competition after the holiday break and take the first steps toward preparing for the Mountain West Championships.

The Rams were set to do so in the sunshine in California this next week at San Diego State, then hang out on the coast for some training and team bonding. That was canceled Wednesday as the Aztecs were set to host five teams Friday – including Colorado State – but a few of the scheduled teams have COVID issues within their programs.

So, the Rams will have to put competition on hold for now. While head coach Christopher Woodard doesn't find it ideal his team may not have a meet until Jan. 22 when it is slated to face Air Force and New Mexico in a double dual at the Academy. The last time they competed as at the Phill Hansel Invite in Houston from Nov. 18-20.

"Any time you go two months – and it will be that once we hit Air Force from the Houston meet – any time you're 60 days or more out of competition, it always concerns me, how kids are going to handle that," Woodard said. "Having been through the COVID era now, I'm a little less concerned. I think they're hungry, so I'm less concerned about their effort and their aggressiveness; I think that will be on display. I tend to get a little bit concerned about details, race strategy."

Colorado State is 13-0 on the year in dual meets, matching the third-best string in program history and establishing a single-season record for dual wins. Woodard said they will explore options for meets next weekend, but the Rams have already faced every team in the area at this point, with a dual against Northern Colorado already scheduled to close the regular season on Jan. 29 for the swimmers; the divers will take part of the Air Force Diving Invitational Feb. 3-5.

If a meet cannot develop with another team, Woodard said the next step would be to hold an intrasquad meet and make it as competitive as possible. Either way, the task at hand is to make the most of the time they have in training between meets.

"I think we now have to look at our training opportunities here and look for chances to be creative with the workouts and start to pit kids head to head or in heats in strokes, so that they start to get those competitive juices flowing and start to think about race s strategy," Woodard said. "In some ways, this is a bit a relief because California was the unknown and having a meet there and having a day off was going to really interrupt our basic training. Here, we have control over the training, so I think we're probably actually in a good situation in as far as what we're trying to build for the Mountain West Championships."
