Duo named swimmer and freshman of the week after DU win

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Combining for five individual victories, the duo of Lucy Matheson and Alexis Trietley both played big roles in Colorado State's women's swimming comeback dual victory of Denver on Friday, leading to the duo earning Mountain West honors this week, the conference announced Tuesday.

For the first time in her career, Matheson, a junior, has been named the Swimmer of the Week, while Trietley picks up the Freshman of the Week honors for the second time.

Matheson won three races in the 152-148 dual win over the Pioneers, taking both the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes, as well as the 100 butterfly. Her fly time of 55.30 is tops in the Mountain West this season, and both of her best times in the backstroke events rank in the top 10.

Trietley, who earned her first freshman honor after the first meet of her career, picked up victories in both the 50 and 100 freestyles, with her top times in those events leading the conference. She capped her day by anchoring the winning 400 freestyle relay with a split of 50.03, helping the Rams overcome a five-point deficit heading into the final race of the day.

Colorado State has now won four weekly conference honors this season. The Rams compete next on Saturday when they host Wyoming in their only home meet of the season. Diving begins at 11:10 a.m., with swimming starting at 12 p.m.
