Sprinter Earns Conference Weekly Honor After Colorado Invitational Meet

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior Lauren Gale was named Mountain West's Track Athlete of the Week for her performance in last Saturday's Colorado Invitational, announced Tuesday by the league office.

The award was as close to a shoo-in as you can get after grabbing two school records. Gale reset her own Colorado State indoor track record in the 400-meter race victory with a time of 51.53, but that pales in comparison to what else the performance meant.

At the conclusion of the race, the time marked the fastest in the NCAA this season and by the weekend's conclusion it still was atop of the national performance list. The next non-power five school competitor is 18th on that list.

Gale, of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, obtained the Mountain West record, passing Wyoming's Shauna Smith (51.79), which has stood since 2004. To cap it off, she also set the facility mark at CU's Indoor Practice Facility.

The other school record came at the end of the meet in the 4x400-meter relay. Gale anchored the CSU team that crossed with a time of 3:36.28 for the win and fourth-best time in MW history. In terms of this season, the time ranks 21st in the NCAA. Gale was a part of the previous school mark set in 2019. Plus, the time set a track record at CU's facility.

Ironically, the award marks her first weekly honor from the Mountain West.

Next, the Rams will compete in the Invitational at the Peak (USAFA, Colo.) and the New Mexico Collegiate Classic (Albuquerque, NM) this weekend.
