Colorado State Women Leading After Day One, Men in Third
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.– Lexie Keller's runner-up finish in the pentathlon highlighted the Rams' day that was otherwise marred by controversy in day one of the Mountain West Championships Thursday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Keller, a native of Albuquerque, N.M., completed the five-event multi with a score of 4,004 points – 35 points behind San Diego State's Sara Absten. The second-place finish equates to eight points, while teammate Jordan Lanning took fourth, which added five points to CSU's total of 13 points from the pentathlon. The medal marks Keller's third in her MW meet history, joining two bronzes (2020 MW Pentathlon, 2021 MW Heptathlon).
While that was wrapping up, the distance medley relays got underway. Colorado State's foursome of Tom Oates, DeVon Washington, Dawson LaRance, and Jacob Brueckman placed third with a time of 9:48.23 to earn six points.
Next is where the day took a turn in the women's DMR. Now, the event consists of a 1200-meter leg (six laps on ABQ's 200-meter track), a 400-meter leg (two laps), an 800-meter leg (four laps), and a 1600-meter leg (eight laps) in that order. However, at lap four, "one more lap" was announced. Some listened, some didn't. It isn't known if the official ushering in the next wave prompted the early mishap or vice versa.
Luckily, the astute Rams didn't fall for the misinformation and Lauren Offerman continued kicking to the proper six laps. Meanwhile, other teams handed off, meaning now there were 400-meter runners blazing by the first group, including Offerman who was in second place – a situation that is impossible. At this point, the cat was out of the bag in terms of the mistake and the rest of the race was chaos with a mix of bewildered and shocked faces looking upon.
Three of the 10 teams completed the race correctly. After a few hours of deliberation, the final official ruling awarded those three teams – New Mexico, CSU, and Air Force – the podium in that order. Fourth Place's Utah State ran the correct number of laps, but in an incorrect order. The rest all ran a lap short and were placed in the order they came across the finish line.
Earlier in the day, four of seven events in the men's heptathlon went to completion without any problems. CSU's Mauricio Galindo Vega resides in fifth place to lead the four Rams in competition. The event will pick back up at 10 a.m. Friday.
After the dust settled, the Ram women concluded day one with the lead at 21 points – eight points from the DMR fiasco – while while the men are third with six points.
