Gale and Keller Qualify for NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Two Rams close out the indoor season for the Colorado State track and field program at the biggest stage – the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships – starting Friday March 11th and going through Saturday March 12th at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
The top 16 competitors in each event across NCAA DI converge at the national meet. For the Rams, Lauren Gale and Lexie Keller will compete in the 400-meter race and the pentathlon, respectively. Gale also qualified for the 200 but is opting out of it to focus exclusively on the one race.
The women's 400 semifinal is scheduled for Friday, March 11th at 6:25 p.m. MT with the final occurring on Saturday at 6:20 p.m. MT. The 16 student-athletes are split into four heats with the winner of each heat advancing then the next four fastest times. Gale enters as the eighth seed with a qualifying time of 51.64, which she set at the Colorado Invitational on Jan. 28th.
Keller's pentathlon will start in the blocks for the 60-meter hurdles at 9:20 a.m. Friday with the final event – the 800 – scheduled for 2:40 p.m. MT. She represents the 15th spot, sporting a score of 4,105 points that she achieved at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Feb. 4th.
Both Gale and Keller own CSU's all-time marks in the two events. Keller, of Albuquerque, N.M., will become the second Ram all-time to compete in the pentathlon, joining Katie Lloyd who finished seventh in 2007. Meanwhile, Gale, of Ontario, Canada, will be CSU's first to run in the 400 at indoor nationals.
If you look through CSU's track and field history with outdoor season, there hasn't been a female 400 runner either. Last year at NCAA West Prelims, Gale placed 13th in the 400m prelims, which was one spot away and .12 seconds from advancing to the NCAA Championships.
Last week at the Mountain West Championships, Gale was awarded MW Women's Performer of the Meet after winning the 200 and 400, which contributed 20 points to the team score. Keller placed second in the pentathlon with a score of 4,004 points that resulted in eight team points for the Rams. Colorado State compiled 151 points en route to the program's fifth MW indoor title.
Live championship coverage for the NCAAs will be streamed on ESPN3 on Friday, March 11 starting at 9 a.m. MT and Saturday, March 12 starting at 9:30 a.m. MT. Live championship results will be available here.
