Gale and Johnson Advance in Events to Highlight Day Two at NCAA West

Lauren Gale in the 400 and Yolonda Johnson in the 400-meter hurdles notch qualifying times
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Securing their spots in their respective quarterfinals, Lauren Gale and Yolonda Johnson extended their seasons Thursday in day two of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at John McDonell Field.

Without any doubt, Gale led heat five of the 400-meter race in its entirety to clock a time of 52.40 and garner an automatic qualifying bid with the first-place finish. She bested a Baylor runner by .21 and an Oregon runner by .72 in her heat. In the whole field, the time put her eighth going into Saturday's semifinals, which will be ran at 5:50 p.m. MT.

Yolonda Johnson finished the 400-meter hurdles at 58.02 – one second shy of her personal record that sits second in school history. Johnson was fourth in heat four, obtaining the top qualifying time of participates that didn't finish in the top three of the six heats.

Both Gale and Johnson will be in 24-competior fields, vying for the top-12 for a trip to the NCAA Championships.

Friday marks day two on the men's side, starting at 12 p.m. MT with the men's discus throw in which reigning All-American Adam Dawson is competing. The rest of the action with Rams involved won't be until the early evening with the 1500m quarterfinals (Jacob Brueckman) at 4:15 p.m. followed by the 3,000m Steeplechase (Thomas Chaston, Dawson Besst) at 4:40, triple jump (Allam Bushara) at 5 p.m., the 400m quarterfinals (Tom Willems) at 5:50 and lastly the 4x400-meter relay to close the day at 7:45 p.m.
