Bryant took home the Southwestern Am title, while Jones won the CGA Match Play crown
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State men's golf is continuing to build on its solid spring, as a pair of current players took home significant amateur titles. Graduate senior Davis Bryant took home the title at the prestigious Southwest Am, while rising senior Connor Jones won the Colorado Golf Association Match Play, both earning their victories on Saturday.
Â
Playing at the Geronimo Course at Desert Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., Bryant rallied from three shots back entering the final round and posted a 3-under 68 to finish at 12-under 272 (71-63-70-68) for the two-shot victory. Ranked 338th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings entering the tournament, Bryant posted a tournament low 8-under 63 in the second round to put himself in contention after opening with an even-par 71.
Â
""I'm beyond thrilled to be 107th Southwestern Amateur Champion," Bryant said. "To be able to join an elite company of past champions and players is very cool. I am proud to be able to start off the summer on a strong note! I am also so happy for Connor for taking home the CGA Match Play Title. We both have been playing well for the past several months and to be able to finish it off today, it's awesome for Ram Country!!"
Â
"What an incredible win for Davis," head coach Christian Newton said. "The Southwest Am is one of the best amateur tournaments in the country. I'm so happy for him as this is such a great accomplishment."
Â
Jones, competing at CommonGround Golf Course & Broadmoor Golf Club, qualified for the match play portion of the event by picking up 3.0 points in his qualifying pod to make the 16-player bracket. In the opening round, the No. 12 seed earned a 2-and-1 win over 2020 CGA Player of the Year and Match Play champion Colin Prater, then defeated former University of Denver golfer Esteban Missura in 20 holes to reach the semifinals. The 2022 Mountain West individual champion then earned a 2-up victory over Westin Pals to reach the finals. Taking on Dillon Stewart, who played collegiately at Oklahoma State, in the 36-hole final on Saturday, Jones built a 4-up lead through the first 19 holes and made it stand, including a sand save for the clinching par in his 3-and-2 victory.
Â
"Match play has always been my favorite," Jones said. "Playing a bunch this summer with friends has me in a good, competitive groove. It's fun to see all the time and hard work starting to pay dividends."
Â
"Historically, our players have had great success in the CGA championships," Newton continued. "I think it is so important to play in these. I'm really happy for Connor as he continues to elevate his game."
Â
The program was well represented overall in the match play as three other Rams were in the bracket. Redshirt sophomore Gavin Hagstrom advanced to the semifinals with wins over No. 2 seed Chris Thayer and No. 10 Alex Wasinger before falling to Stewart. Former player and current assistant coach Parker Edens also made the 16-player bracket, falling to Stewart in the Round of 16 match.
