Matheson swimmer of the week, Whineray top freshman

FORT COLLINS – Lucy Matheson is back at it again. And she has a new freshman to pair with, too.

The senior from Longmont, Colo., was named the Mountain West Swimmer of the Week after her performances in helping Colorado State beat Air Force and New Mexico in a pair of duals over the weekend at Edora Pool Ice Center in Fort Collins. The conference additionally tabbed Tess Whineray as the Freshman of the Week, the first honor of her career.

Matheson won the 200-yard butterfly and the 100 backstroke at the double dual, finishing second in the 50 fly. She was also a member of all four winning relays during the weekend. Matheson posted a 57.19 to win the 100 back and 2:04.45 to top the field in the 200 butterfly. The 50 fly was for fun, going 25.47.

She was named swimmer of the week a record-tying four times in a season last year, and on three of those occasions, freshman Lexie Trietley won the newcomer award. Whineray is already doing her part to fill the void.

She won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:03.30, with the altitude adjustment of 2:02.10 the top time in the Mountain West this year. She was second in her other individual event, the 100 back, her 57.67 just behind Matheson. The product of Auckland, New Zealand, also helped both winning medley relay teams.

The Rams compete next on Oct. 27 when they host Denver for a Pink Out dual at Moby Pool, beginning at 4 p.m.
