Rams Set to Host Pioneers at Moby

Pink Out meet reignites Front Range rivalry
The two teams may not be conference foes, but the rivalry between the two is real.

Friday, Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team will host Denver, two teams which have met every season since 2002-03, a run of 21 consecutive seasons between the two Front Ragne schools. Denver leads the series 12-10, but the Rams have won the past three.

"Denver's one of the best mid-majors in the nation," CSU head coach Christopher Woodards said. "They continually have not only a deep team, but they generally have a couple of kids who not only compete in the Summit League really well, but occasionally reach the NCAAs."

The meet will begin at 3:15 p.m. with the 3-meter springboard competition. Swimming will follow at 4 p.m., with the 1-meter part of the 16-event program. Denver is ranked 13th by SwimCloud among mid-majors, Colorado State 14th.

Colorado State is 2-1 on the season, having topped Air Force and New Mexico two weekends back at Edora Pool Ice Center. Denver has had just one dual following a couple of invitational meets, beating the Falcons on the road last weekend. The Rams came off their successful weekend feeling they had made strides in some targeted areas, so the dual with Denver provides a launching point for the next set of goals.

"I think we cleaned up a lot of mistakes and we swam a lot tougher, specifically at the end of races last weekend," Woodard said. "I'm pleased with that. I think each one of them needs to start thinking about what's the weak point in my race strategy and how do I eliminate that. We're eight weeks into training, so this is the time when things get pretty darn serious. You're basically building a race strategy for the end of season."

The team will wear special caps for the Pink Out meet, established to honor breast cancer warriors. This is the second of three scheduled meets in Fort Collins for the team this season, matching the total of home meets for the Rams from the past three seasons combined. While the trip to EPIC still felt like a home meet, the return to the comforts of Moby Pool is welcomed.

"In this four-year run, I think they've seen about four home meets," Woodard said. "I think the seniors are enjoying this. They did enjoy the opportunity at EPIC, but being at Moby, in their training environment, that's always a special feel. This should be a big one for us."
