Trietley, Whineray named swimmer, freshman of the week, respectively

FORT COLLINS – After setting a pair of pool records in a dual win over Denver, Colorado State's swimming and diving team landed swimmer and freshman of the week honors, the Mountain West announced Tuesday.

Sophomore Lexie Trietley, who was named freshman of the week a record six times in her sensational debut campaign, was named Swimmer of the Week for the first time. Tess Whineray was named Freshman of the Week for the second time.

Trietley played a part in both, anchoring the 200-yard medley relay team which posted a 1:42.93 to eclipse the previous Moby Pool record set by Houston in 2017. But the product of Olean, N.Y., wasn't done, taking an even bigger name off the board – six-time Olympic gold medalist Amy Van Dyken.

Trietley's 23.21 in the 50 freestyle (second best in the conference this season) beat the pool mark of 23.32 set by Van Dyken in 1994, the year she won the NCAA Championship in the event. She produced another individual victory in the 100 freestyle, then brought the 200 freestyle team from behind as the anchor for another win.

Whineray led off the record-setting relay with the backstroke leg, then continued to dominate the day in the stroke, winning both the 100 and 200 lengths against the Pioneers.

Colorado State will return to the pool this Friday with a double dual at Queens University with Old Dominion also in attendance.
