Colorado State has some success with new relay combinations

COLORADO SPRINGS –  The Rams finally came off the blocks.

Colorado State's women's swim and dive team competed in the first day of the Front Range Invite on Friday to open the season at the Air Force Academy.

The Rams finished the day with 377 points, sitting third overall.

This meet was the first of the season for the team including three freshmen divers and two freshmen swimmers. Addison Wicklund, placed fifth with her 400-yard medley relay team including Maisy Barbosa, Katie Flynn and Azalea Shepherd.

In the 400-yard medley relay, the team consisting of Tess Whineray, Skyler Lyon, Rylee O'Neil, and Lexie Trietley placed second with a time of 3:50.25. This combination of swimmers is new since Lyon transferred to CSU this year.

"In our medleys we're still searching for the right mix, we know that there's some legs that there's going to be some competition," coach Christopher Woodard said. "Tess Whineray is doing amazing in the backstroke, but I think we've got some open competitions in some other spots."

Whineray not only placed second with her medley team, but she also won the 200 back with a time of 2:02.07. Whineray is a returning sophomore and mainly swims backstroke.

Trietley had a successful first day, placing in multiple races including first in the 50 free with a time of 23.74. She also placed second in three events, the 400 medley relay, the 200 free relay and the 100 free with a time of 52.59. In the 200 free relay her team, Ashlyn Hembree, Whineray and Shepherd, finished with a time of 1:36.01.

"We graduated Lucy Matheson, Anika Johnson, Megan Hager, and those were three tent poles for most of our relays, so we're trying out all new combinations," Woodard said. "We got Skyler Lyon from Utah Tech could help us in our medley relay and we're just looking at some of our younger kids and returners. Lot of opportunities and more relays tomorrow."

The Rams picked up victories from familiar faces as Erin Dawson paced the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:06.78, while Maya White won the 200 butterfly in 2:06 88.

The diving team has three freshmen and Maggie DiScipio, junior. DiScipio placed third with a score of 281.55 and the freshmen all placed outside of the top six.

This meet has platform diving, which is new to the freshmen, so the team is focusing on easier dives and just having fun with the platform. The team will also be competing in the women's 1-meter tomorrow which should go well.

"I think they really broke the ice with their first meet today and it went fine," diving coach Chris Bergere said. "I eas satisfied and there's something to be taken away from everything they did, a silver lining. I think they were excited to be at the pool and everything."

The team is looking to bring high energy and a lot of cheering to the deck tomorrow. The coaches are looking to try out some more relay combinations and the swimmers are going to make adjustments to their own swimming so they can help lift up their team. The second day of the meet will be Saturday at 10 a.m.
