Local event puts Rams all in the same race

FORT COLLINS  – In preparation for the 2024-2025 season, Colorado State will be represented by the entire swim team at this year's Horsetooth Open Water Swims.

This event was started by CSU alum Oliver Turner in 1999. Throughout the years, several universities other than CSU have participated, including Adams State, Air Force and Northern Colorado.

"Open water swim just allows them to all race with each other; they're not separated by events and they're not separated by lane lines," coach Christopher Woodard said, "That's pretty cool because you'll see a lot of them finish together and run out of the water with their hands held high."

The competition takes place at 7 a.m. on Sept. 8 at Horsetooth Reservoir. CSU swimmers will participate in the 2.4-mile collegiate race which will be the first wave of the competition.

Last year, the team had an 8-2 dual season with a third-place finish at the Mountain West Championships.  Their first official event this season will be the Front Range Invitational on Oct. 4-5.
