Colorado State hits the water ready

DENVER – The Rams made their first splash count.

Colorado State's women's swim and dive team completed the first day of the Front Range Invite on Friday to open the season with swimming at Denver and diving at Air Force. The Rams finished the day with 352 points, sitting second overall.

The Rams wasted no time making a statement, opening the meet with first place in the 400-yard medley relay. Tess Whineray, Claire Wright, Erin Dawson, and Lexie Trietley clocked a time of 3.44.39 to secure the win and give the Rams strong momentum heading into the competition.

"It was really encouraging, you know, and not really top to bottom but really that top line" coach Christopher Woodward said. "Coming out guns blazing really sets the tone for the remainer of the team. Taking both the relays was really key for us. We're happy with that."

Several familiar faces throughout the meet helped the team secure several key victories across individual and relay events. Erin Dawson placed second in the 500 free, while Lexi Trietley claimed the top spot in the 50 free with Azalea Shepherd not far behind, securing third place with a time of 23.39. These standouts helped set the tone for the day.

Trietley had an outstanding performance, delivering strong results in both team events and individual events. She also took second in the 100 free, along with helping her teammates take first place in the 400 medley relay and the 200 free relay.

Trietley's success in the pool not only reflects her talent but also the resilience and growth that comes with years of dedication to the sport, something Woodward acknowledges as a key part of every swimmer's journey.

"I think for every swimmer, the hope is that your entire career is just going to be a linear progression. But the reality is, especially in our sport, because they start so young, it can be really difficult by your junior and senior year to put personal bests up," Woodward said. "We had a talk about putting the cap back on. She is someone who does not shy away from the spotlight and she definitely wore that cape today."

Freshman Sydney Ovesen led the way for the divers, placing third overall with an impressive score of 245.20 on the 3-meter board. Ovesen's performance set an energetic tone for the freshman divers leading into the season. Teammates Juliana Dodd and Maggie Di Scipio also made an impact placing 12th and 16th with a scores of 208.65 and 201.25 leaving their mark.

Dodd, like Ovesen, is a freshman, and of the 11 first-year Rams who competed in their first collegiate meet, eight added to the point total.

The Rams will look to carry their strong momentum into day two of the Front Range Invitational as the competition continues Saturday Oct. 4, at 11:00 a.m. with swimming at Denver and diving taking place at Air Force featuring the women's 1-meter diving event off the platform.
