Michael Mooney transitioned from student-athlete to volunteer coach in the 2025-26 season before being elevated to Director of Operations and assistant coach for the 2026-27 seasons.

In his first year as a coach he helped the Rams achieve a Mountain West Championship in indoor and outdoor track. In those conference championships the distance crew earned five all- conference honors, with two West Regional qualifiers and one advancing to the NCAA Championships.

Before Mooney's coaching career began, he competed for seven years at CSU due to medical and COVID-19 redshirts. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in communications with a minor in sport management and a Master's degree in sports management. While competing for the Rams he was a four-time Mountain West All-Conference performer in the 8k in cross country, 3000-meters, the mile and the distance medley relay. He finished his career with four top-20 marks in CSU history, while earning Academic All-Mountain West honors in 2024.
