Track and Field (1968 to 1972)

Barb Lawson-Alm is one of the early pioneers of women’s track and field at Colorado State and during her career became a champion. She competed in track and field at CSU at a time when little emphasis was on women’s athletics and no records were kept like they are today. She won the Kansas relays in the 880 in 1969, 1970 and 1971 and was a two-time champion at the Drake Relays in 1971 and 1973. In 1970 she became the first women’s athlete at CSU to win a national championship when she won the mile run in 1970, and as a one-woman team, CSU finished seventh in the nation. She earned two All-American awards in 1970 and helped pave the way for women in track and field years before Title IX. Lawson also competed in the Amateur Athletic Union Championships from 1968 to 1972, finishing as high as third in 1971 for the 1,500-meter outdoors.

Barb Lawson graduated from CSU in 1972 with a BA in business administration, but continued to compete in athletics. She earned a master’s degree in education in 1986 and lives in Idaho.
