Men’s Swimming (1969 to 1971)
Ralph Hutton is one of the most accomplished men’s swimmers in school history. A native of Ocean Falls, British Columbia, Hutton came to Colorado State in 1968 following his amazing performance in the Olympic Games in Mexico City. At those games, Hutton won a silver medal for Canada in the 400-meter freestyle event. He then came to CSU to continue his training and set school and WAC records in 1969, 1970 and 1971. In 1970 Hutton placed second in the nation in the 500-yard freestyle and 1,650 freestyle along with placing fourth in the 200 freestyle, earning him three All-American awards. He set three individual WAC records in the 200, 500 and 1650-meter freestyle. Hutton also earned two more All-American honors in 1970 for the 400 and 800 relays.Â
As an international competitor, Hutton won a total of 24 medals between 1963 and 1972. He was also the AAU national champion in the 400-meter and placed second in the 200-meter freestyle. In 1972 Hutton competed in his third Olympic games in Munich and retired from competitive swimming afterward. He eventually became a member of the Vancouver Police Department and continues to coach swimming.Â
