Tight end has second chance with Rams

FORT COLLINS – Pearce Spurlin III landed on the Comeback Player of the Year Award Watch List. College Sports Communicators in association with The Associated Press (AP) and Fiesta Sports Foundation, released a "Watch List" of 94 college football student-athletes from 59 different schools currently under consideration for the 2026 Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Spurlin, a transfer from Georgia was told in February of 2024 by doctors that he could no longer play football due to a congenital heart condition. He had to medically retire from Georgia, where he remained part of the team and on scholarship, but not playing, for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Since, Spurlin had surgery at the Cleveland Clinic to repair his aortic valve, which should allow him to have a normal active life without restrictions.

Since 2018, the award has recognized college football student-athletes for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances.  At the conclusion of each season, in a vote by a panel of college football writers, editors, and sports information directors, three college football student-athletes are honored as Comeback Player of the Year Award winners at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.
