Rams Set To Begin Basketball Workouts

Fort Collins, Colo. ? Colorado State University?s men?s and women?s basketball teams - both postseason participants a season ago - head back to the hardwood when preseason workouts begin at midnight Friday night, Oct. 17. Men?s coach Dale Layer and women?s coach Chris Denker and their respective squads will be on hand at 10:30 Friday night for Moby Madness.

The event is part of a marketing campaign announced by athletics department officials last week to increase exposure and season ticket sales for Colorado State?s men?s and women?s teams.

Layer, in his 4th season as the men?s coach, and Denker, his women?s coaching counterpart, will have their teams involved in an evening full of activities as the Rams begin practice for the upcoming season.

Once the nighttime activities conclude, both coaches will bring their squads back to work Saturday. The men?s team, which won the Mountain West Conference title a year ago and played Duke in the NCAA Tournament, practices Saturday morning, and the women later in the day. Chris Denker?s women?s squad played in the WNIT semifinals last year and won 20 games for the 8th consecutive season.

In cooperation with ASCSU and the Ram Leadership Program, Friday night?s activities include:

Doors to Moby Arena will open at 10 p.m. Events that night will include:

  • The first 500 students entering Moby Arena will receive free ?Forever Green? tee shirts;
  • Free popcorn and soft drinks for fans attending the event;
  • A 30-second layup shooting contest for free ski lift tickets to Steamboat;
  • A dunk contest for contestants from Greek houses on campus;
  • An around-the-world shooting contest for a free airline ticket sponsored by Frontier Airlines;
  • A student 3-point shooting contest;
  • A half-court shooting contest for students;
  • Students can register to participate in a ?Dash-For-Cash? contest.

    Rich Bircumshaw, the play-by-play voice of the Rams? football and men?s basketball radio broadcasts, will serve as the master of ceremonies.

    Both the men?s and women?s team will also hold a brief workout at 12 midnight to celebrate the official opening of the 2003-04 preseason practice schedule. Both teams return to the floor later Saturday for additional practice sessions.
