Fort Collins, Colo. - Following Moby Madness Friday night at midnight, Colorado State's men's and women's basketball team return to the court in earnest Saturday to begin preseason basketball workouts.
Men's coach Dale Layer and women's counterpart Chris Denker will have their squads on hand at 10:30 p.m. Friday night to begin two hours of activities leading up to midnight.
Moby Madness, an event that is open and free to the public, will officially kickoff preseason drills for the two teams. Student giveaways, prize drawings, and shooting contests are scheduled until the Rams' teams can officially take the court when the clock strikes 12.
In the meantime, Layer and Denker will introduce their teams to the crowd, then hold a brief workout once midnight passes.
A few hours later, both teams return to the court for a more formal practice session.
The men's team will practice twice Saturday, including a workout at 10 a.m. The women's team practices at 12 noon.
Layer, in his fourth year at the helm, guided Colorado State to the Mountain West Conference title last year. The Rams won the MWC tournament and played Duke in the NCAA Tournament.
Leading the list of returnees is junior center Matt Nelson, who led the team by averaging 17 points per game last season. He was the MVP of the league tournament and last summer earned an invitation to the USA Basketball Pan American Games team tryouts.
Women's coach Chris Denker led his team to a 21-13 record in his first year at Colorado State, and guided the Rams to the WNIT semifinals. Senior Joy Jenkins and Jasai Ferrucho lead the Rams. Jenkins averaged 8.5 points and 3.4 rebounds last season, while Ferrucho scored five points per game and already ranks 20th on the school's career assists list.
