Jenkins Leads Rams Past Gaels
12/21/2003 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Led by senior forward Joy Jenkins, the Colorado State women?s basketball team won its third consecutive game with a 72-54 victory over Saint Mary?s this afternoon in Moby Arena. Colorado State improves to 6-3 on the season, while the Gaels fall to 5-5 on the year.
Jenkins scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in the win. Sophomore center Lindsay Thomas was the only other Ram in double figures, scoring 11 points. Senior guard Jasai Ferrucho and sophomore guard Vanessa Espinoza each had five assists to lead all players and freshman guard Annika Walseth tied her career-high with three steals.
The Rams shot .429 from the field and from beyond the arc, nailing six three pointers in the contest -- four of which came from Jenkins -- and they grabbed 42 rebounds, compared to just 32 for Saint Mary?s.
?Joy was outstanding today,? said head coach Chris Denker. ?All-in-all, I thought it was a good effort, even though we were a little sluggish for a stretch in the second half. LT (Lindsay Thomas) had one of her better games this season and Molly (Nohr) did some very good things. I really like her energy on the court, diving for loose balls and hustling all the time.?
Saint Mary?s was led by Triola Jackson with 18 points and Evynn Van Burger with 11. Jackson also led the team with nine rebounds and she and Lauren Shaughnessy each had four assists, while Shaughnessy led the team with two steals.
The Rams scored the first basket of the game, a long jumper by Jenkins and then the team went on a 6:05 scoring drought. The Gaels only managed five points in that span, and the Rams snapped the drought and tied the score on a three-pointer by freshman Kylee O?Dwyer. O?Dwyer?s triple started an 8-0 run for the Rams and they would lead 10-5 and never relinquish the lead. After trading baskets through the middle part of the first half, the Rams closed the half out on a 10-2 run to go into the locker room at halftime with a comfortable 34-19 lead.
Saint Mary?s scored two points on free throws by Van Burger to start the second half, and then the Rams went on a 7-2 run to increase the lead to 41-23 with over 17 minutes left in the game. With just under 10 minutes to go, the Gaels cut the lead to 12 after hitting three treys in a short span (50-38). Thomas scored on a turn-around jumper and then Jenkins connected on her third of four triples to give the Rams a 15-point lead again, 55-40. With St. Mary?s fouling in the final five minutes of the contest, the Rams turned around their woes at the charity stripe, hitting seven of eight shots to ensure the victory.
Colorado State will have the next days off from competition for the holiday break. The Rams return to the court on Monday, Dec. 29 against Notre Dame at 7:00 p.m. The Rams will then kick off the new year with a game against Loyola Marymount on Jan. 3 at the Pepsi Center in Denver in a doubleheader with the men?s team.
