Rams Finish Ninth at Border Olympics...
The Colorado State men?s golf team joined a field of twenty teams to play in the 52nd annual Border Olympics, the nation?s second oldest tournament on April 4 and 5. The tournament was played at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas and was hosted by Texas A&M. The Rams opened the tournament by shooting rounds of 297 and 284 on day one. The team followed up that performance by firing a final round score of 295 to give them a three-round total of 876 to finish in ninth place. The Rams finished 17 strokes behind the tournament champion, Texas A&M who finished with a score of 859. The tournament marks their tenth straight top ten finish of the year. As a team, Colorado State led the competition in birdies made with 52. The team was also second in par five scoring at minus 17.
Laird Strong Again...
Junior Martin Laird continued to prove why he is among the nation?s best at the Border Olympics. Laird carded rounds of 75 and 66, respectively on day one to put him in a tie for eighth place. Laird continued to play well in the final round, finishing with a score of 72 to move up two spots into a tie for sixth place, with a three round total of 213. Laird?s second round score of 66 marks the 10th time this year he has shot below 70 in a round. Laird has now finished in the top ten of his last six tournaments. Top honors in the tournament went to Andrew Dahl of Arkansas who finished eight strokes ahead of Laird with a score of 205. Laird?s par five scoring in the tournament was six under, the third best in the field.
Juniors Step Up...
Colorado State also got solid performances from the rest of their field. Junior Brett Tobyne was the second on the team behind Laird. Tobyne carded three rounds of 73 and finished the tournament in a tie for 28th with a score of 219. This was his highest finish in the last three tournaments. Nolan Martin was close behind Tobyne, finishing the tournament with a score of 221. Martin finished tied for 45th. Sophomore John Hayes played consistently, with rounds of 75, 74, and 76 to finish with a three round total of 225. Senior Tommy Sharp rounded out the field for the Rams. He finished with a score of 229.
Next Up...
The team?s next tournament takes place in the final week of April when the Rams head to Provo, Utah on the 25th and 26th to play in the Cougar Classic.The tournament is being hosted by fellow Mountain West school BYU. The event will be held at the Riverside Country Club. The tournament will get kicked off with 36 holes on day one and the final 18 on day two.
