Fort Collins, Colo. - Colorado State University President Al Yates today appointed Christine Susemihl as the school's interim director of athletics, effective July 1.

Susemihl is currently the school's associate athletics director for compliance. The appointment follows the announcement earlier this week that director of athletics Jeffrey Hathaway will leave the school at the end of the month to take a similar position at the University of Connecticut.

Yates, who is retiring later this summer, made the announcement after a discussion with incoming president Dr. Larry Penley, dean of the business school at Arizona State University.

"We have had extensive discussions and agreed that it is very important to move as quickly as possible in naming an interim director and moving forward on a search for the next athletic director," said Yates. "We have also reviewed the possibility of retaining an external athletic consulting firm to assist in the process and are confident that we will find the right leader to continue the success of Colorado State athletics."

Yates said a national search is already underway to develop a list of candidates for Penley's review. Yates, working with Penley, will name a search committee next week.

"I am going to do all that I can to assist Dr. Penley in any way to make sure that we continue the growth, success, and tradition of the athletic department," Yates said.

Susemihl joined the staff in 1973 and oversees the department's rules compliance as an associate athletics director.

"It will be a team effort," said Susemihl. "Every individual in this department has an area of expertise that we are going to continue to rely upon, and this team of people has helped make the department so successful.

"We are going to continue to move forward and complete the projects that we've already committed to, and continue to expand and grow this program," she said. "It's imperative for our student athletes, for our coaches, our staff and our fans and donors that we move forward."
