Loftin Earns Two All-American Certificates
6/16/2003 12:00:00 AM | Outdoor Track & Field
At the 83rd annual NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, senior Drew Loftin finished second in the hammer after a throw of 222-6. He also placed seventh in the discus on Saturday evening, becoming a two-time All-American in the span of 48 hours.
Loftin entered the hammer throw with the best throw in the nation this season and finished second behind Lucais MacKay of Georgia, who threw 230-3 to win the event. In the discus, Loftin threw 187-9 to finish seventh in a surprise event by many track and field fans. In the preliminaries on Thursday, the leader all season, Gabor Mate of Auburn, failed to make finals, as did Colorado State?s Brian Trainor. That left the field wide open and sophomore Hannes Hopley from SMU claimed the title with a throw of 200-11. He was the only competitor all weekend to surpass the 200-foot barrier.
Sophomore Mike Nicks ran on Friday evening in the finals of the steeplechase. He finished 14th with a time of 9:04.71. Nicks broke the school record in the steeplechase twice during the season and has two years left with the Rams.
Loftin scored 10 points for the Rams (8 hammer, 2 discus) to earn the team a tie for 24th place at the championship.
