Sophomore forward Lindsay Thomas, coming off the bench for the first time all season, led the Rams with 13 points, while sophomore forward Melissa Dennett scored 11 and sophomore guard Vanessa Espinoza chipped in 10 points. Dennett also led the team with six rebounds, while freshman center Marilyn Moulton grabbed a career-high five rebounds. Espinoza led the team with four assists and four different Rams had a blocked shot in the contest.
Wyoming was led by sophomore guard Ashley Elliott with 18 points and senior guard Brenda Pickup added 14 points. Sophomore forward Kristen Lenhardt chipped in 11 points and she, Pickup and freshman Michelle Lieber tied for the team lead with six rebounds each. Pickup also led the team with four assists and five steals.
?We missed four layups in the last two-and-a-half to three minutes,? said Head Coach Chris Denker. ?When you?re going to do that and miss open looks for three, your window of opportunity becomes very narrow. I don?t think we played bad defense tonight, we just didn?t capitalize on their (Wyoming) mistakes and they did.?
Wyoming sank eight three-pointers in the game, which ties San Diego State for the most made against Colorado State this season.
For the first time since Mar. 8, 1990, Colorado State started three true freshmen in a game. The Rams had both Kylee O?Dwyer and Marilyn Moulton make the first starts in their careers, while Annika Walseth started her fifth game. Senior forward Joy Jenkins did not play in the game, due to a broken nose, missing her first-ever game at Colorado State.
The Rams closed within three points, 54-51 with 39.6 seconds remaining and forced a Wyoming turnover with 36.7 left on the clock which turned into a Dennett layup to bring the score within one, 54-53, but Wyoming sunk four of its last six free throws for the 58-53 victory.
Colorado State will host New Mexico on Thursday evening in Moby Arena and then Air Force on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
