Men's Golf Preview: Nelson and Barona Cup

Next on the Tee: Nelson and Barona Collegiate Cup... After a week off from competition, the Colorado State men?s golf team will have a busy schedule to end the fall season. On Oct. 22-24, the Rams will travel to Palo Alto Calif. to compete in the Nelson hosted by Stanford University. The Nelson will comprise of 17 teams including: Stanford, Colorado, Colorado State, Texas Pan-Am, UNLV, Idaho, Florida, Southern, Notre Dame, Kansas, Nothern Colorado, West Florida, Georgia State, Kansas State, UC Davis, New Mexico and Missouri. This is the ninth year of the tournament, sponsored by Clarke Nelson, a 1954 graduate of Stanford. The tournament will be played at the par 69/6,444 Stanford Golf Course. The formate will consist of teams comprised of five individuals playing 18 holes each day for three days (54 holes total) with the four low scores counting towards the team score. Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. each day. The 2003 team champion was Duke (278-281-275--834) and Ryan Blaum of Duke was the individual champion (66-69-66--201).

CSU will then head to San Diego, Calif. to play in the Barona Collegiate Cup. The Rams are coming off a 6th place finish at the Fresno ?Lexus? Classic hosted by Fresno State. The Barona Cup and Nelson will be the final tournaments of the fall season. Colorado State will be back in action on Feb. 23-25 in Honolulu, Hawaii at the John Burns Intercollegiate.

Rams Ranked No. 61... The Colorado State men?s golf team moved to No. 61 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index rankings.

Looking Back at 2003 Barona Cup and Nelson... In the 2003 Barona Cup the Rams claimed top team honors carding a three-day total of 836. The mark of 836 is No. 2 on the all-time tournament team score list. Colorado State had four players finish in the top 20, with Martin Laird finishing 4th carding a score of 206, and Nolan Martin registering a 208 to earn a tie at 7th place. The Rams also shot a single-round 273 marking it No. 3 on the all-time single-round team score list.

The Rams finished in 4th place at the 2003 Nelson tournament hosted by Stanford University. Colorado State shot a three-round 843 with Nolan Martin shooting a 203 to earn 3rd place. The Rams? team score of 843 is 3rd on the all-time tournament team score record.

Fresno ?Lexus? Classic Recap... The Colorado State men?s golf team shot a final-round, three-over-par 291 en route to a three-round total of 860 to finish in sixth place in the Fresno Lexus Golf Classic at Fort Washington Country Club in Fresno, Calif.

Junior Kevin McAlpine led the Rams with a five-under 211 to finish the tournament in a tie for eighth place individually. The Blargowrie, Scotland native, finished the event with a one-under 71 in the third round on Saturday.

Sophomore Derrick Whiting was second on the team with a two-under 214 while Nate Pettitt came in with a two-over-par 218 for the event.

Rounding out the scoring for the Rams in the tournament were Praneeth Perera with a five-over 221, Aaron Weston with an eight-over 224 and John Hayes with a 10-over 226.

Mountain West rival Brigham Young claimed top team honors in the tournament with a 37-under-par 827. Greg Machtaler led the Cougars with a tournament-best, 14-under 202.
