Ram Basketball Survives Scare From UNC

Micheal Morris scored eight points to key an 11-0 second half run and lead Colorado State University's men's basketball team to a 76-68 win over visiting Northern Colorado in Moby Arena Monday night.
The Bears, making 14-of-28 first half field goals, jumped to a nine-point, 38-29 lead and extended the margin to 11 minutes into the second half. After Morris hit a basket, UNC's Sean Nolen's three free throws gave the Bears a 45-36 lead with 14 minutes, 30 seconds to play.
From that point, Morris nailed a pair of three-pointers sandwiched around Phillip Thomasson's three-point play, and Jason Smith's follow put CSU ahead, 47-45 with the 11-0 rally.
After a free throw by Erik Olson, James Randle made one foul shot to tie the score for a fourth and final time. Guard Andrew Patterson's three-pointer with 11 minutes, 11 seconds to play put the Rams ahead.
Behind the play of center Matt Nelson, who had a game-best 17 points, the Rams stretched the lead to as many as 13 points. UNC would come no closer the rest of the way.
The Rams finished the game having made 22-of-50 field goals, 44 percent after making just 41 percent of the team's shots the first half. UNC, which shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, finished the game at 40.4 percent, making only 9-of-29 field goals in the second half.
"We came out and played much better in the second half," said Rams' coach Dale Layer. "We were able to go inside, wear them down. Defensively, we were much better in the second half."
Nelson also took game honors with seven rebounds. Freshman Jason Smith finished with 12 points and Morris added 10. UNC was led by Nolen's 16 points.
