Hot Second Half Lifts Rams Past Mavs:
Matt Williams keyed a 10-0 second half run by scoring six points to help Colorado State University defeat visiting Nebraska-Omaha, 88-64 in Moby Arena Wednesday night.
The win raises Colorado State's record to a perfect 3-0 entering the team's first road game of the year, Saturday night at IUPUI (KCOL Radio, 600 AM-Fort Collins; KNUS Radio, 710 AM-Denver).
Williams, a six-foot, six-inch senior from Temple, Tex., finished with a game-best 25 points, one shy of his career mark, including 19 points in the second half. He also recorded the third double-double game in scoring and rebounding of his career with 11 caroms.
"Matt Williams played terrific ball game," said CSU Coach Dale Layer.
He also praised the play of guard Micheal Morris, who finished with 18 points along with three assists and three rebounds.
"Micheal continues to string together great games," said Layer.
The teams traded six first-half leads until Morris sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around center Stuart Creason's free throw in the final minute of the period to erase a four-point, 37-33 deficit and send the Rams to intermission leading, 40-37 by virtue of the 7-0 run.
Colorado State then outscored the Mavericks, 6-2, the first two minutes of the second half to stretch the lead to seven. UNO would come no closer the rest of the way.
Reserve guard Nick Ball's layin as time expired gave the Rams their final 24-point margin in the game.
Besides Williams and Morris, center Matt Nelson was the third Ram to score in double figures, with 12.
UNO suffered its first loss in four games. The Mavericks were led by Randy Bland's 12 points, while Calvin Kapels scored 10 points. Ryan Curtis led UNO with seven rebounds.
