The Colorado State women?s basketball team improved to 5-1 on the season and 5-0 at home this afternoon, defeating Texas Pan-Am 77-36 in front of 1,321 fans at Moby Arena.
The win was the second largest of the season for the Rams and the Broncs 36 points is the fifth lowest points allowed in school history.
Three players scored in double figures today. The team was led by Lindsay Thomas? 16 points, which included a perfect 4-4 from the line. Junior Melissa Dennett also stepped up big today, pouring in 13 points and also snatching seven boards. Vanessa Espinoza scored 14 points on 6-11 shooting from the field. She also dished out four assists.
Freshman Sara Hunter continued to shine for the Rams today. She grabbed a season-high seven rebounds to tie with Dennett for the most boards in the game.
The Rams used a number of big runs today to put the Broncs away. Prior to this game the team?s biggest run was 12-0 versus Iona. Today Colorado State had three runs of 14-0.
Colorado State never trailed in the game. The team jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in the game and did not look back. The Rams used a 14-0 run half way through the half and a 15-5 run the last six minutes of the half to take a 42-19 advantage into the locker room.
The Rams shot 48.6 percent from the field in the first half on 17-35 from the field. Thomas led the team in scoring in the first half with 10 points.
The Rams came out in the second half and continued right where they left off. The teams exchanged buckets for much of the first 10 minutes before Colorado State blew the game open.
CSU held the Broncs without a field goal for the last 9:10 of the game. In the same period the Rams outscored UTPA 18-2.
Turnovers played a large factor in today?s game. UTPA committed 35 turnovers compared to 20 by CSU. The Rams converted 26 points on turnovers today.
