Women's Basketball Defeats UNLV, 79-65

2/21/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

A career-high 22 points by sophomore guard Vanessa Espinoza and a game-high eight assists by senior guard Jasai Ferrucho led the Colorado State women?s basketball team to a 79-65 victory over UNLV in Moby Arena tonight. With the win, the Rams improve to 14-9 overall and 6-5 in Mountain West Conference play, while the Rebels fall to 18-5 overall and 7-3 in league action.

Sophomore center Lindsay Thomas scored 14 points and had a team-high six rebounds, while Ferrucho added 13 points, freshman forward Kylee O?Dwyer scored 11 points off the bench and sophomore forward Melissa Dennett added 10 points in the win. Espinoza, besides the career-high 22 points, added six assists and five steals and hit three three-pointers. The Rams shot 50% from the field in the game, including three-for-four from the three-point line in the second half.

?We had very good guard play tonight,? said Head Coach Chris Denker. ?Jasai and V (Espinoza) were outstanding and they did a phenomenal job breaking the UNLV press. Kylee was huge off the bench and not just statistically. She did all the little things right.?

Junior center RanDee Henry, the leading scorer in the Mountain West, led the Rebels with 16 points, while sophomore guard Sheena Moore scored 15 and Kameca Simmons came off the bench to record a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Nikki Hitchens led the Lady Rebels with three assists, while Sherry McCracklin had two blocked shots. UNLV committed 24 turnovers in the game and did not hit a three-pointer, going 0-for-11 from beyond the arc.

?To play two totally different teams this weekend, an up-tempo contest tonight versus a slow half-court game on Thursday (against San Diego State) and come out with two wins is huge,? said Denker.

Colorado State closes out its home season on Friday in the second Border War against the University of Wyoming. The Rams will honor their two seniors, Joy Jenkins and Ferrucho prior to the start of the game, which is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
