Colorado State earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament and defeated the University of Dayton in Midwest Region first round game. The Rams then beat in-state rival Colorado, 64-56, in the second round in Manhattan, Kan., to advance to the regional finals for the first and only time in school history. Colorado State and CU had not met on the hardwood for more than a decade prior to the meeting in postseason play.
Playing Drake University in the regional finals, Colorado State narrowly missed a chance to advance to the Final Four, losing 84-77.
Last Meeting: New Mexico used a first-half surge to lead 28-20 at intermission and won,63-51, Feb. 7 at The Pit in Albuquerque. Streak Notes: Colorado State defeated the Lobos,74-58, to open MWC play in Fort Collins a season ago. Colorado State has not beaten New Mexico twice in a row in Fort Collins since wins over the Lobos in 1992-93 (67-65) and 1993-94 (72-770).

Pepsi Center Revisited: As a requirement for the MWC and Colorado State to co-host the NCAA men?s first/second round games in 2004, the Rams played a regular-season game in the arena, defeating Pepperdine, 91-65, Jan. 3.
And Next Season: Colorado State will play another regular-season game at Pepsi Center in 2004-05, facing nationally-ranked Oklahoma State Nov. 27.
Coaching Tenure: Colorado State coach Dale Layer is concluding his fourth year at the helm, tying for the seventh longest men?s basketball coaching tenure at the school among 18 coaches in school history.
Last Back-To-Back: Colorado State will enter the 2004 MWC Tournament in Denver on the heels of last season?s miracle run to the championship and ensuing NCAA berth. The Rams will be trying to win back-to-back first round games for the fourth time in school history, and first time since the 1995-96 seasons. Colorado State has won back-to-back opening round tournament games in 1984-85, 1988-89, and 1995-96. The 1989 squad advanced to the finals before losing but earned an at-large invitation to the NCAA Tournament.
Triple Play: Three in a row. That?s how many overtime games Colorado State played in succession including a heartstopping 75-74 win over Border War rival Wyoming before a sellout crowd in Moby Arena. F Matt Williams paced the Rams with 15 points while F Ronnie Clark had 12 rebounds. After the teams finished regulation deadlocked, G Dwight Boatner scored the game winner with under seven seconds to play following a steal when he bounced a shot off the backboard, caught his own rebound, and scored a left-handed layin with under seven seconds to play for a Rams? victory.
More Extra Work: For the first time in Moby Arena history, Colorado State played back-to-back overtime games when the Rams beat UNLV, 89-83 despite losing C Matt Nelson to injury. The Rams led by 17 points with eight minutes to play in the game when Nelson ? who had scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds ? went down in a heap at the defensive end with an aggravated knee injury. UNLV rallied to send the game into overtime, but Colorado State won by six points and was paced by F Ronnie Clark?s 10 rebounds.
Double Trouble: G Micheal Morris scored a career-most 24 points and C Matt Nelson grabbed 13 rebounds in a 92-82 double-overtime victory over San Diego State, the Rams? first conference win of the season
The Miracle In Moby: Moby Arena opened in 1966. One of the most memorable games in arena history took place a day before a new year arrived in 2004. Colorado State led by as many as 13 points before falling behind in the second half, setting the stage for the ?Miracle In Moby.? Trailing by four points with seven seconds to play, G Micheal Morris hit a three-pointer to draw the Rams within a point. F Matt Williams deflected the ensuing inbounds pass, Morris caught it in midair atop the arc and threw in a shot at the buzzer for an improbable 71-69 win over the 21st-ranked Boilermakers.
Back-To-Back: It had been more than four seasons since Colorado State had recorded back-to-back road victories. Colorado State accomplished that feat with wins at Stetson and South Florida. C Matt Nelson scored 25 points, while F Ronnie Clark had 13 rebounds and G Jon Rakiecki added six assists in the win at Stetson. The Rams played without injured G Micheal Morris and swingman Shelton Johnson but managed the team?s second road win of the year. F Matt Williams hit a free throw with under two seconds to play to provide a win at South Florida. Nelson finished with 17 points in the game while Williams had nine rebounds.
First Double-Double: Junior F Matt Williams picked an opportune time to have the finest performance of his career. Williams had the first double-double game in scoring and rebounding before a capacity crowd in Moby Arena during the Rams annual in-state battle with Colorado by scoring a career-most 26 points and 10 rebounds in the game.
Rams Win First On Road: Coach Dale Layer said when the season started the Rams needed to be a more successful team on the road in 2003-04. Colorado State wasted little time in notching the team?s first road win of the year in their first try, winning at Drake. C Matt Nelson paced Colorado State with 22 points in the victory in Des Moines.
