Multi-Eventers Conclude Second Day At MWC

The Colorado State heptathletes and decathlete finished the second day of the Mountain West Conference Championship this afternoon. Freshman Katie Lloyd finished fifth with 4,965 points, while freshman Tonya Cure was sixth with 4,565 points and freshman decathlete Kevin Johnson placed ninth with 5,714 points. Junior Cristina Gourdin did not finish the 800 meters or the long jump.

Lloyd?s total of 4,565 points is a new career-best for the freshman, surpassing her previous best total of 4561. She started the day with a 17-8.75 long jump to finish fourth and then threw 118-10 in the javelin which was also good for a third place finish. She concluded the heptathlon with a 2:27.69 in the 800 meters -- two seconds faster than her previous career best -- to place ninth.

Cure also recorded a career-best in the heptathlon with her 4,565 points, surpassing her prior total of 4,537. Cure started the day with a leap of 18-0.5 in the long jump to finish third and then threw 82-6 in the javelin for 10th place. Cure then ran a 2:16.05 -- also a personal best by over two seconds -- to finish second.

Johnson ran a 15.74 in the 110 meter hurdles to start the day with a sixth-place finish. He then threw the discus 114-0 to place sixth again and record a personal best. He no-heighted in the pole vault, but continued to compete, throwing 127-7 in the javelin for 10th place and ran a 5:10.78 in the 1500 meters and finish 10th and shave over 10 seconds off his personal best.

The rest of the Colorado State track & field team will begin competition at the Mountain West Conference Championship on Friday at 8:00 a.m. (Pacific) with the women?s 10,000 meters.
