Fort Collins - Colorado State University men's basketball player Freddy Robinson underwent surgery late Saturday night to repair a partially torn Achilles tendon in his left leg after he was injured during a workout earlier in the day.
Robinson, a six-foot, five-inch swingman from Tulsa, Okla., was practicing with his teammates, who are preparing for an eight-day trip to Mexico Aug. 12-19 where the Rams will play five exhibition games.
Team medical officials said it is unknown at this time how long Robinson will be sidelined and when he could possibly return to thelineup in 2004-05.
"This is a really a tough break for Freddy," said Rams' coach Dale Layer. "He was playing extremely well. Freddy had been working exceptionally hard, and his hard work was paying off in how he performed. He had also emerged as one of our team leaders. I am disappointed not only for our team, but especially for Freddy because of how hard he had worked to improve."
Robinson was fourth on the team in scoring last season, averaging 8.9 points per game, including a 31-point performance at UNLV. He is one of four returning starters who were expected to anchor the Rams' attack in 2004-05. Robinson started 21 of the 25 games in which he played.
Robinson and other returning members of the 2003-04 team had gathered earlier this month for workouts in preparation for the trip to Mexico. Robinson suffered the injury during a routine drill with no other players near him.
