Rams Pick Up First Conference Win Over SDSU

1/20/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

The Colorado State women?s basketball team won its first Mountain West Conference game of the season tonight, posting a 63-50 win over San Diego State to improve to 1-2 in league play and 10-6 overall. With the loss, the Aztecs fall to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in Mountain West action.

Colorado State was led by junior forward Melissa Dennett with 22 points and 13 rebounding, marking the fifth double-double this season and seventh of her career. She also tied her career-high with five offensive boards. Sophomore guard Annika Walseth notched career-highs in rebounds with 10 (breaking her previous high of seven from the game against Denver earlier this year) and assists with six (breaking her previous high of four from three different games), while junior forward Lindsay Thomas added 12 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots in the Rams victory. Junior guard Vanessa Espinoza led the team with two steals.

The Rams scored 28 points in the paint, compared to just eight for the Aztecs, but San Diego State nailed eight three-pointers on 29 attempts, while the Rams sunk just one out of seven.

?Tonight our shot selection was better (than last weekend in Utah),? said CSU Head Coach Chris Denker. ?We had 18 assists on 23 field goals, so we executed better. I thought all-in-all we defended well and closed it out with some big rebounds.?

San Diego State was led by forward Michelle Strawberry with 20 points, including four three-pointers, while sophomore guard Michelle Elliott added 17 points and led the squad with eight rebounds and Veronica Shaw came off the bench to lead the team with five assists and three steals.

There were four ties and four lead changes in the first half, with the Rams scoring the final four points to take the 24-20 lead into the locker room. After the break, the teams traded baskets and SDSU cut the lead to just two, 28-26 before the Rams scored 12 of the next 15 points to lead 40-29 with just under 12 minutes remaining. During that stretch, six different Rams contributed in the scoring column.

Colorado State will face UNLV on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Lady Rebels lost earlier this evening in Laramie to Wyoming, 46-43. The Rams will retire former consensus All-American Becky Hammon?s (1996-99) jersey during the game.
