Rams Start Air Force Invitational

The Colorado State indoor track and field teams were at the Air Force Invitational today for the first full meet of the season. The meet concludes tomorrow with the finals of several track races and all field events.
Sophomore Katie Lloyd scored a career-best 3,635 points to finish second in the pentathlon, just 62 points behind Christine Spence of UNLV. Senior Cristina Gourdin totaled 3,320 points to place fourth, while freshman Emily Pearson was seventh with 3,059 points and freshman Tonya Cure was eighth with 2,992. The women?s distance medley relay team placed third after clocking in at 13:00.66, while freshman Melissa Thomas, freshman Kirsten Anthony, freshman Linnea Pudwill and junior Danielle Buzzell finished second through fifth, respectively in the non-seeded mile. Anthony then finished second in the non-seeded 3000 meters in 11:24.22, while fellow freshman Katie Sammons placed fifth in 11:49.08. In the pole vault, a pair of freshman, Jyoti Jennewein and Ashleigh Morton, both cleared 10-0 in their first meets. In the 200 meters, senior Katrice Thomas had the second fastest time, qualifying for the finals tomorrow after crossing the tape in 24.68. Sophomore Megan Fox ran a 56.98 -- tying for the fastest time in her career -- to finish third and qualify for finals. In the 800 meters, both senior Becky Hammitt and freshman Adrienne Parry will be competing tomorrow after running a 2:20.08 to finish third and a 2:26.73 to finish 13th, respectively.
On the men?s side, the distance medley relay team consisting of senior Mike Nicks, junior Justin Hazzard and seniors Brett Melin and Paul Michel were victorious with a time of 10:16.42. Senior Adam Trainor was also victorious, winning the weight throw with an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 68-3.75 and teammates Nate Heyrman, Trey Eder and Jace Rivera finished fifth through seventh, respectively. A trio of Rams, Rob Watson, Jeff Wahl and Steven Swartz swept the top three spots in the non-seeded mile, while Ryan Kirkpatrick placed fifth. Wahl also finished fifth in the non-seeded 3000 meters. Senior John Woods turned in the fastest qualifying time in the 200 meters, running a 21.57, while sophomores Drew Morano, Denny Majerus and Rodnee Pope and seniors Chris Grapsas and Brandon Kent finished fourth through eighth, respectively to advance to tomorrow?s finals. Senior Brandon Kent finished fourth in the 400 meters at 49.42 to qualify for finals and both junior Nelson Palacios and freshman Andres Urbina will be competing tomorrow in the finals of the 800 meters.
Colorado State will conclude competition at the Air Force Invitational tomorrow and next weekend, will be in Laramie, Wyoming for the Robert Shine Invitational.
