Mens Golf Preview: Lexus Classic

Next on the tee...
The Rams will embark on their third tournament of the fall season when they travel to Fresno, California for the Fresno State Lexus Classic this Friday. The Rams are looking to achieve their second consecutive top-10 finish as they earned a tie for ninth place at the Wolfpack Invitational. Last year at the Lexus Classic the Rams finished with an 860 total to lead them into sixth place. The team's low round last year was a second round 284. The format consists of 54 holes, with the top four scores being counted from each team's six players. Friday's play begins at 7:45 a.m. with a shotgun start for 36 holes, and Saturday's tee time is at 8 a.m. for the final 18 holes. The course is a par-71, 6,776-yard course at the San Joaquin Country Club. The teams set to compete against Colorado State include Hawaii, San Diego State and UTEP .This year the Rams competing are Zen Brown, Herve Gevers, Kevin McAlpine, Nate Pettitt, Aaron Weston, and Derrick Whiting Live scoring will be available on www.golfstat.com.


Freshman Zen...
True freshman Zen Brown led the Rams at the Wolfpack Invitational with a three-round 217, which gained him a tie for 25th. His low round was a two-under 70 which he carded in the second round. Zen shot a 236 in his first tournament, the Tucker Invitational, and improved by 19 stokes at the Wolfpack Invite. Only Brown and Derrick Whiting have carded a sub-par round twice in the same tournament.


McAlpine McTastic...
Last year at the Lexus Classic, Kevin McAlpine earned himself an eighth place tie by tallying a 211 three-round total, led by a low-round of 69, and two 70s. This year McAlpine is the only team member to card below a 70 in both tournaments. McAlpine has finished with a 221 total in both tournaments this year, and earned a tie for 41st at the Wolfpack Invite. This has earned McAlpine the second lowest stroke average on the team at a 73.67.


Witty Whiting ...
At Fresno, Calif. in the fall of 2004, Derrick Whiting finished tied for 18th place with a 214 total. His low round of a 70, followed by rounds of 71 and 73 helped him achieve a top-20 finish. This year Whiting is leading the Rams lowest stroke average at a 72.50. He also holds the lowest stroke round, a five-under par 67.


Rams Roundup...
Last year at the Fresno State Lexus Classic Nate Pettitt finished tied for 28th. His low round was a 71, and his overall total was a 218, his third lowest total of the 2004-05 season. Currently, Pettitt is third on the team in lowest stroke average with a 74.33. The Rams are coming off of a ninth place finish when heading into competition at Fresno. The Rams had a three-round 871 total at Reno which gave them their first top-10 team finish of the 2005-2006 season.
