Women's Tennis Competes at ITA Central Region Championships

Colorado State's women's tennis team travels to Salt Lake City to compete in the ITA Regional Championships this week. Senior Carla Pallares (2-5), junior Emily Kirchem (4-4), sophomore Anne Andersen (4-5), and freshman Lauren Strasburger (5-3) will represent the Rams at the regional tournament.
Kirchem, ranked No. 120 in the nation, is seeded alphabetically in the main draw. Andersen is also qualified for the main singles draw and will compete with Kirchem in the doubles draw.
Strasburger, who is seeded, and Pallares will participate in the qualifying draws on Wednesday to qualify for the main draw tournament on Thursday. Both will have to win two matches to make it to Thursday's main draw. They will also play as a team in the doubles tournament throughout the weekend.
"We have the opportunity to show we've established ourselves in the region," said Coach Jon Messick. "Everyone is playing well. We hope to go through more rounds than we have before. This is a tough tournament and everybody is a good player."
Air Force Invitational Recap The Rams came home successful from the Air Force Invitational October 7-9 in Colorado Springs.
Senior Jasmin Singh won singles flight five by winning all four matches over the weekend. She overpowered Kellie Crail of Northern Colorado 6-0, 6-1, and Jackie Richey of Wichita State 6-0, 6-1. Lauren Strasburger was second in singles flight two by winning both matches on Saturday and falling to Marisa Mechem of Denver 6-3, 6-2, Sunday morning before rebounding to defeat Torrie Browning of Wichita State 6-3, 6-2, later in the day. Mechem won the flight.
Freshman Courtney Akel defeated Christina Shelly of Northern Colorado 6-3, 6-4, Sunday and finished first in the consolation bracket of flight four. Anne Andersen went 1-1 in the flight one consolation bracket by beating Wendi Webster of Wichita State 6-2, 6-2, and losing to Ana Exeni of Wichita State 6-4, 3-6, (10-5). Freshman Greer Satherlie also went 1-1 Sunday in flight three losing to Andrea House of Wyoming 6-1, 6-4, and defeating Karen Groll of Northern Colorado 6-3, 3-6 (10-3).
Emily Kirchem struggled in flight one Sunday by losing to Annette Aksdal of Denver 1-6, 6-1, 6-1, and to Jessica Vanderdys of Colorado 6-4, 6-2. Both Denver and Colorado are nationally ranked. Kirchem finished 2-2 over the weekend after winning both matches on Saturday. Carla Pallares lost both of her matches, falling to Karissa Walker of Air Force 3-6, 6-4, 4-0, and retiring to Amy Senko of Wyoming.
