LAKESIDE, Calif.- The Colorado State University men's golf team finished the Barona Collegiate Cup hosted by San Diego State University in a tie for 10th place with Kansas State University. Senior Kevin McAlpine led the way for the Rams with a 205 three-round total, earning him a tie for fourth place overall. His 205 ranks as the fourth-lowest three-round total in school history and is the first Ram since Nolan Martin in 2004 to record a score of 205 or better. He had two rounds of 69 and matched his career low with a 67 in the second round.
Nate Pettitt and Derrick Whiting continue their streaks of tournaments with at least one round at par or below and have had a par or better round in each of their first four tournaments. Pettitt finished with a 73-68-75=216 while Whiting carded a 73-73-70=216. Freshman Zen Brown continued his solid play ending the event tied for 31st with a six-under 212 .
Before the Barona Cup, McAlpine's highest place finish this season was a tie for 40th at the Tucker Intercollegiate. His fourth-place finish is the highest of any Ram individually since he and Aaron Weston tied for second at the Irish Spring Invitational last March.
BYU retained its Barona Collegiate Cup team title with a 42-under 822. Other Mountain West teams competing in the tournament were San Diego State, who finished fourth, and Utah, who tied for 12th.
McAlpine was only four strokes away from the individual winner James Love of Denver who carded a 15-under 201.
The Rams will conclude their fall season November 3-4 at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif.
