Women?s Basketball Drops to 4-4 in League Play
2/11/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The Colorado State women?s basketball team dropped its second conference game in a row with a loss to BYU at home on Thursday night. The loss to BYU marks the first time in 11 years the Rams have fallen to the Cougars at home. The Rams fell to BYU on February 12, 1994.
The Colorado State women?s basketball team dropped to 4-4 in conference play on Thursday night with a 59-47 loss to BYU at Moby Arena.
Colorado State shot just 34.6 percent from the field Thursday night, including a 6-for-26 performance in the first half (23.1 percent). The Cougars dominated the Rams on the inside, with 38 points in the paint, compared to just 12 by the Rams.
The game was close in the early going, as the lead changed hands three times before the eleven-minute mark in the first half. At 11:33 Ambrosia Anderson made a lay-up to give BYU the 12-10 advantage and the Cougars would never look back.
CSU would go on to hit just one field goal the rest of the half as BYU went into the half with a 15-point advantage, 31-16. The Rams shot 2-for-18 from the field over the last 16 minutes of the first half.
The Rams 16 points tied a season low for points in a half this season. The Rams scored 16 points in the first half at New Mexico last week.
Head Coach Chris Denker felt the first half was the difference in tonight?s game.
?Of course I am not pleased with a loss, but the problem tonight was that we dug ourselves too big of hole in the first half,? said Denker. ?We just didn?t play our game in the first half.?
Colorado State came out in the second half with more intensity, but it was not enough to close the gap.
The Rams opened the half with a 6-0 run but BYU was quick to respond with a 7-0 run of its own, over the next three minutes. The run was snapped by Liz Kramer?s first three-point basket of the night at the 11:37 mark.
The Cougars and the Rams would then go on to play closely for the remainder of the game, but the Rams could not wash away the deficit. Colorado State cut the Cougar lead to 11, 53-42 with just under two minutes remaining in the game, but would come no closer. BYU came away with the victory 59-47, improving its conference record to 5-3 and dropping CSU?s conference record to 4-4.
The Rams were led tonight by Lindsay Thomas who went 6-of-12 from the field and 1-of-2 from the free throw line for 13 points. Thomas, along with Melissa Dennett, also led the team in rebounds; each had seven. Kramer provided a much needed spark off the bench for CSU tonight. The sophomore scored eight points, including two three-point baskets.
Leading the way for the Cougars were Julie Sullivan and Anderson. Sullivan contributed 16 points while Anderson chipped in 12 coming off the bench.
BYU shot 43.5 percent from the field tonight on 27-of-62 shooting. The Cougars also out rebounded the Rams tonight 41 to 32.
Colorado State will return to action on February 17 when they take on UNLV in Las Vegas. Colorado State defeated the Rebels 69-66 earlier this season. Tip is set for 7 p.m. PT, 8 p.m. MT. Complete results will be available at the conclusion of play at CSURAMS.com.
