No. 15 Utah Downs Rams, 64-50

2/12/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball

Colorado State University rallied down the stretch before falling to No. 15 Utah, 64-50 in Salt Lake City Saturday night.

Saddled with foul trouble the entire game, the Rams used a 16-4 run to close a 17-point deficit to just five, 53-48, with three minutes, 20 seconds to play in the game on a Jon Rakiecki three-pointer.

But Utah would outscore CSU, 11-2 the rest of the way to run its record to 21-3 overall, 9-0 in Mountain West Conference playwhile the Rams are 9-13, 1-8.

Forward Matt Williams, who had missed the last three games with a knee injury, started for the first time in more than a month and responded by scoring a team-most 17 points.

"Matt Williams was terrific," said Ram's coach Dale Layer. "He helps us in many different ways. Our team feels it when he is on the floor."

Williams and center Matt Nelson, who scored 12 points, were the only Rams in double figures. Nelson, the team's scoring leader, opened the game by scoring 10 points in the first half but was saddled with three fouls early. He scored only two free throws the rest of the way and did not have a rebound for the first time in 98 career games at Colorado State.

Meanwhile, Utah was led by star center Andrew Bogut, who scored a career-most 33 points and had a game-high 16 rebounds. Bogut made 17-of-19 free throws in the game.

The Rams led early in the game and the teams were tied four times, the last at 8-8, before the Utes used a 7-0 run to take the lead for good 15-8.

Colorado State trailed by as many as 17 before rallying down the stretch to close within five, 55-50 with two minutes, 37 seconds to plya. Rakiecki hit three three-pointers, Micheal Morris added a trey and a dunk, and Matt Williams scored two points to highlight a 16-4 run to cut the margin.

Colorado State returns to acton Monday night at 7 p.m. at BYU. The game can be heard on the Colorado State Sports Network including flagship station KCOL Radio, 600 AM in Fort Collins, and 710 KNUS in Denver.
