Rams Fall to Cowgirls

2/24/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

The Colorado State women?s basketball team fell to the Wyoming Cowgirls 68-45 in Laramie, Wyo. Thursday night.

Colorado State shot just above 35 percent for the game (19-of-53) compared to 41.5 percent (27-65) by Wyoming. The Rams also struggled from the free throw line, converting on just 4 of 11 attempts.

The Rams ran into trouble early in the first half when junior Lindsay Thomas picked up her third foul of the game and was forced to sit. Thomas received the foul in the midst of a 22-3 run by Wyoming that put the Cowgirls up by as many as 20 and essentially put the Rams out of the game.

Wyoming led by 15 at the half, 35-20, and the Rams could never seem to erase the deficit.

In the second half CSU was outscored 33-25.

Turnovers and large runs proved to be a difference in the game. The Rams committed 18 turnovers, compared to just seven by Wyoming.

The Cowgirls scored 14 points off CSU turnovers.

Large runs by Wyoming helped key the victory for the Cowgirls. Wyoming had two runs of 10 and one run of 12 in the game to keep the Rams out of it.

Tonight?s loss marks the first time this year the Rams have out rebounded an opponent and lost. Colorado State pulled down 42 boards and Wyoming grabbed 39.

Playing well for the Rams was junior Melissa Dennett. Dennett led the team in scoring with 13, on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. She also paced the Rams in rebounds with eight.

Vanessa Espinoza and Thomas also contributed on the offensive side; both scored nine points and pulled down five boards.

Wyoming had four starters score in double figures tonight. Hanna Zavecz led all scorers with 17 points, followed by Sara Hippen with 12. Erin Hicks and Ashley Elliott each added 11.

Tonight?s loss drops the Rams overall record to 14-10 and its conference record to 5-6. Wyoming improved to 15-10 overall and 6-6 in league play.

The Rams will return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they take on Utah in Moby Arena. The game is part of a double-header, with the men playing Wyoming later that night at 7 p.m.
