Rams Finish 2-2 at Claremont Tournament

The Colorado State women?s water polo team concluded play in the Claremont Colleges Tournament with a 2-2 overall record over the weekend.
The Rams began with an 8-6 loss to Occidental before defeating La Verne 8-4 and Caltech 17-7. CSU finished the weekend with a 9-7 setback to Whittier on Sunday brining its season record to 5-7.
Occidental 8, Colorado State 6: CSU took an early 1-0 lead after a Taylor Felton goal but Occidental would score four unanswered en route to a 5-2 halftime lead. The Rams would rally with two goals in the third and two in the fourth closing Tiger lead to 7-6 with 2:26 to play but OU?s Danielle Montenegro would hit for her third goal of the day to put the game out of reach for the Rams.
CSU was led by a three-goal performance by Annie Quinn marking her team-leading fourth hat trick of the year. Felton, Marisa Fernandez and Laurien White also added a goal apiece to round out CSU?s offensive production for the match.
Fernandez recorded a team-high two assists while Quinn led the way with five steals for the Rams. CSU goalkeeper Holly Stanfill made seven saves on day as well.
Colorado State 8, La Verne 4: Colorado State held La Verne without a goal in the second half of play on Saturday extending a 4-4 halftime score to an 8-4 victory in Claremont.
CSU?s Laura Scruggs and Annie Quinn combined to give the Rams a 2-1 lead after one quarter but La Verne came back to tie the score at 4-4 at the halftime break. Taylor Felton posted three goals in the second half for CSU while Ram goalkeeper Holly Stanfill turned away all eight La Verne shots to give Colorado State the 8-4 win.
Felton led the Rams with three goals followed by two from Annie Quinn and one each from Leah Kelly, Emily McCullough and Laura Scruggs.
Quinn and Laurien White paced CSU with two assists each while McCullough had a team-best five steals on the match. Stanfill turned away 10 La Verne shots in goal for the Rams on the day.
Colorado State 17, Caltech 7: The Colorado State water polo team fell just one goal shy of the school record as they posted a 17-7 victory over Caltech Sunday in Claremont, Calif.
Laura Scruggs led the team with four goals while Brittany McGinley and Lisa Pretz each recorded three. Seven other Rams recored a solo goal on the match.
Laura Lauth and Kristin Buttke tied for team honors with five assists while Lauth led the Rams with two steals in the match. Andrea Lugo stopped four shots in goal for the Rams to lead the way defensively.
Whittier 9, Colorado State 7: CSU?s Annie Quinn and Marisa Fernandez each scored two goals to lead the Rams in a losing effort against Whittier College Sunday in Claremont, Calif. The Poets defeated CSU 9-7 sending the Rams? record to 5-7 on the year.
CSU struck first with a goal 1:20 into the match but Whittier notched two-straight goals before CSU came back to tie the score 2-2 on a Quinn goal late in the first. The Poets added a last-second score to go up 3-2 after one period of action.
CSU would tie the score at three before giving up two more Whittier goals to give the Poets a 5-3 advantage. CSU came back to tie the score at 5-5 and again at 6-6 before Whittier scored three-straight goals to go up 9-6 with :43 to play
Taylor Felton, Emily McCullough and Shari Worack each tacked on a goal each for CSU while Laurien White captured two steals to lead the team.
CSU will be in action again when they compete in the Fluid Five Tournament in Bloomington, Ind., April 2-3.
