CSU water polo welcomes back 22 former Rams for Reunion Game

THORNTON, Colo. – Twenty-two former Colorado State water polo players rejoined the program on Saturday for CSU’s first reunion game. In all, 40 of the program’s 63 all-time players were in attendance, with many participating in the game.
“It was really a great experience,” said associate head coach Mike Moody, who has been with the program for eight of the nine years, dating back to 2006. “It was special to get so many girls, from all nine teams, back in the water together. It was a great celebration.”
The current players were paired off against the alumni, with the exception of the alumni borrowing a goalie from the current roster. The only two coaches in program history, Moody and John Mattos, were the game’s referees. Mattos, who served as CSU’s swimming & diving coach for 31 years until his retirement in 2011, started the water polo program in 2005.
The game was fun and lighthearted for many, and by the closing minutes, all athletes jumped in the pool, closing the game with 36 participants.
The game was extra special given the news the program faced in late January, when it was announced that women’s soccer would replace water polo as a sponsored sport at the conclusion of this season.
“We had been planning on doing a reunion game since the fall, but I think the news of this being our last season really made the former players want to come back one last time and see everyone,” Moody said.
Prior to the game, CSU's two 2013 seniors, Melissa Fisher and Shelby Schaefer were recognized. They'll leave CSU as the program leaders in career saves and assists, respectively. After the game, many joined in a team dinner at C.B. & Potts, where they shared memories and caught up on life together. Several brought their spouses and children.
“It’s crazy how much they’ve all grown up,” Moody said. “It was fun to see them play again, and then to catch up at dinner.”
Among those in attendance were some of the program’s all-time greats, including Ali Pavlik, CSU’s lone All-American, and nine of CSU’s 12 All-WWPA selections. Additionally, several members of the 2010 team that defeated No. 17 UC San Diego—CSU’s first-ever win over a ranked opponent—and the 2005 team—the inaugural season—participated.
The Rams will continue their season in the WWPA Championships April 26-28 in Santa Clara, Calif. They will go in as the No. 4 seed, tying for the best seed in program history.
